How to Make an Addition and Subtraction Activity
What you need:
- 5 pieces of colored paper
- ruler
- toilet roll
- pencil
- black marker
- scissors
- glue stick
Step by Step Tutorial
Divide the toilet paper roll into five equal parts. You can use a ruler to make this process easier.
As you can see in the example, the ruler helps to keep everything super straight.
Cut out five strips of different colors from the colored paper in the same size as the strips.
You can use whatever colors you want; these are just the colors used in this project.
We like orange.
But we also like blue.
And yellow.
Measure the strips so that there is a small section to glue them together.
Write the numbers from 1 to 10 on three strips.
Write a “plus and minus” sign.
Measure your next strip.
And repeat the writing of the numbers.
Write an “equal” sign on the next one.
And write numbers 1-10 again on the last strip.
Be careful not to glue them onto the paper roll – glue only the strips, so they can slide around the paper roll.
Glue them over the roll in this order: numbers, plus/minus sign, numbers, equal sign, and numbers.
You will be able to move the columns around as you try to solve different problems.
You can work on math problems with your child or allow them to work independently.
Either way, this is a game-changer when it comes to teaching and learning.
Don’t be afraid to allow your child to spend time figuring out these problems.
The colors make the process of learning even more fun.
Which part of this project is your favorite?
Enjoy learning math!
