I always loved drawing and felt insanely proud when I learned to draw something new.
Drawing didn’t really come naturally to me though, I did struggle with it for a while as I wanted my creations to look perfect even as a kid (was never asked or expected for them to be perfect, it was just a thing that was going on in my head).
I needed some guidance, to realise you can do things one step at a time and that simple shapes can turn into beautiful creations.
While I do believe the most amazing creations come naturally, sometimes we do need directed drawing to master the basics. And once you have the basics, like know how to draw a butterfly, you can take things from there and add your personal touch. It certainly helped me build my drawing confidence.
We are all about making things easy peasy here and it was about time we tackled drawing too – so we are starting a new how to series – dedicated to drawing for kids.
Each of our tutorials will come with a printable PDF template you can print and use at home or in the classroom to get the kids to draw their creations.
We really hope our how to draw series will inspire your kids to get into drawing!

Start by drawing a circle for the head. The circle doesn’t have to be perfect.
Tip: the more circles you draw the better they will look. Practice makes perfect!
Next, let’s draw a body shape.
You can make it with one stroke, or make two strokes, starting at the top and joining at the bottom.
Draw a first pair of wings. Try to make them symmetrical.
Now draw a second pair of wings. These are usually a bit smaller than the first pair, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong if they are the same size or even bigger.
Now lets draw in a nice little face.
Everyone loves a butterfly with a smile :). I love when our cute critters are showing their tongue, so be sure to draw that too.
Add finishing touches and color.
Draw circles inside the wings (you can also draw other markings) and a few stripes on the body of the butterfly.
Congratulations! You have learned how to draw a easy butterfly!
All there is left to do is to color your butterfly drawing.
