Tape Resist Spiderweb Art

Tape resist spiderweb art is one of the easiest and most fun Halloween art ideas you can do with kids of all ages. It’s easy enough for a toddler to do and can be creative enough for grade school-aged children to enjoy as well.

It’s a Halloween art project that can be successfully done both in the classroom and at home, either with one child or a large group of students.

How to Make the Tape Resist Spiderweb Art

What you need:

  • white construction paper, or small canvas (you can get them at the dollar store type stores for cheap)
  • tape – not any tape will do – use washi tape or masking tape if working on paper. If you are using canvas regular tape should be OK
  • paints (watercolors or tempera paints) or use crayons

Step by Step Tutorial

For older kids, have them build their own frame for the tape resist spiderweb art. For younger kids (toddlers) prepare the taped canvas/paper beforehand and let them just enjoy the messy part.

Place a sheet of paper or a blank canvas in front of the kids. Have the kids cut a long strip of tape and glue it across the paper, running through the middle from left to right. Next, have them tape the paper from top to bottom. Lastly, have them tape two strips of tape running diagonally from one corner to the other.

This is the base for our spiderweb art.

Step 1

Let’s move to the inner sections of the cobweb.

Have the kids cut smaller pieces of tape and work on building a spiderweb shape. Depending on their skill (and canvas and tape size) they can make two octagons or more.

Step 2

It’s time to start painting.

We are using watercolors for this easy Halloween art, but there really are no limits to the type of paints your kids will use or brushes (fingers make excellent brushes too). Pick one color (we used purple) and paint a few sections.

Step 3

Swap for another color and paint a few sections more.

Step 4

Add more colors, as many as you want, until all the sections are colored in.

Step 5

Once the canvas is painted, start to slowly peel the tape off.

Step 6

All done!

Step 7

We hope your kids will enjoy making this tape resist spiderweb art.
