Fall brings an abundance of one of the most wonderful crafting materials: leaves! Today, we’ll be making painted leaf bugs, a fun and creative project the kids will absolutely love making.
You can make this project any time of the year, but fall is best, as leaves are already dry and ready to be painted on (or just need some extra preservation).
I do recommend making these with dried leaves as this will guarantee this project lasts for quite a while. Preserve fresh leaves properly before painting them for leaf bug crafts to prevent wilting or damage.

How to Make Painted Leaf Bug Crafts
What you need:
- craft paper
- leaves (dried leaves are best, but you can use fresh ones as well)
- craft paints
- paintbrush
- googly eyes
- black marker
Go beyond these simple bugs!
Create painted leaf bug crafts with specific bug types like butterflies, dragonflies, or caterpillars using leaves. Use different leaf shapes and sizes to make various insects and bugs.
Step by Step Tutorial
You can just paint the leaves to look like bugs, but this project will look even better if you use background paper or cardstock.
To make simple bugs, picking out oval leaves is perfect.
Your kids will find it easy to transform these leaves into ladybugs, beetles, and even bees.
Paint the leaf and let the paint dry.
Paint the top of the leaf black to create the bug’s head.
Paint a line along the center of the leaf and, if making a ladybug, add some black dots.
Allow the paint to dry again.
Glue the leaf onto the paper with glue.
Have your kids paint more leaves in different colors and glue them beside the first ladybug.
Use a black marker to draw antennae.
And legs.
Draw those to the remaining bugs and beetles as well.
Glue googly eyes to bring your leaf bugs to life.
All done!
