We love movable paper dolls, it’s just one of those crafts that are pretty easy to make and so fun to play with.
And when it comes to these dolls, butterflies are one of the bests as you can really make them fun and colorful.
Not to mention looking them in action, running around and flapping wings, is the best.
Just pull the string and make the wings move.
How to Make a Movable Butterfly Paper Doll
What you need:
- our paper doll butterfly template
- heavier print paper / cardstock
- split pins (paper fasteners / brads)
- string
- scissors
- optional craft stick and glue
Step by Step Tutorial
Print out the butterfly paper doll – either the black and white template or the pre colored one.
If you printed the black and white one, the first thing to do is to color it.
Next cut out the two wings and the butterfly body.
Punch holes – two holes on each wing and two holes on the body.
Depending on the age of the children you work with this step might fall onto you. You can use a variety of objects to punch holes – skewers, pens or even split pins as long as you have a soft surface to place the template on and punch holes through.
Let’s assemble the paper doll. Start with one split pin.
With the wing, the split pin goes through the inner hole (the white dot one). Be mindful of this.
Push the split pin through the hole in the butterfly body and wing. Spread it to secure it.
This is how the front should look like.
Do the same with the other one.
Next comes the string. Push the string through the hole on the wing (the black dot) and thread it through the hole on the other wing.
Tie the string. Make sure the “loop” isn’t too small. It’s better to have a large loop than a too small one.
All done! Your movable butterfly paper doll is complete. If you want you can also stick a craft stick on the back.
