Make an Animal Farm – DIY pretend play set

Let the kids make their own toys – have them make an animal farm with the help of our animal printables and this step by step tutorial.

We just love it when a craft for kids can be used as a tool for play too. This project will give your kids lots of hours of play time.

We’ll show you how to make an awesome printable animal farm play set

Your kids will have a ton of fun assembling this farm and caring about the animals throughout the day and throughout the night as well.

The first thing you want to do is to wake the animals up. You will do this by placing the sun over the farm in the morning.

So no need to scream, shake or stress them any other way so they wake up.

Just put the sun over and they are up.

Next, we want the animals to go and hydrate, then we want them to munch.

So we just go and place them around their food and water pots.

After that, we will let them have fun playing outside.

When the night comes, we want the animals to go and nap a few hours.

Now we place the moon over the farm and put the animals to sleep. Easy – peasy, right?

How to Make an Animal Farm

What you need:

• our animal farm template
• scissors
• 2 equal boxes (we used tea ones)
• glue
•  2 A4 / letter sized color papers
• chenille sticks or wooden sticks

Let’s start!

Step by Step Instructions

Start by gluing the two boxes together. 

Then wrap them carefully with color papers.

Making the Fence

Let’s make the fence so our animals don’t run away.

The size will vary depending on what height and width your boxes are.

Glue 12 equal wooden sticks vertically and 4 wooden sticks horizontally. You can also use paper straws. 

Farm Animals

Print and cut out the creatures from our template at the end of this post.

You can use the color version or the black and white one and color the creatures with colors of your choice.

The Moon and the Sun

Apply some glue on the back of the sun, the moon and on the back of all of the animals and put the wooden sticks on.

Let the glue dry.

Water and Food Pots

Put some glue on the back of the food and water pots and arrange them inside the farm.

Now go and place each animal in front of its food pot.

Remember – if the sun is up, the animals are awake.

If the moon is up, all animals nap.

All done!
