How to Make the Paper Butterfly Spring Craft

What you need:

  • white paper or cardstock
  • scissors
  • black marker
  • colored markers or crayons
  • color paper (blue and green)
  • glue stick

Step by Step Tutorial

Start with a blank piece of white paper or cardstock.

Using a black marker, have kids draw a circle for the butterfly’s head and a long oval-shaped body beneath it. We also have this how to draw a butterfly tutorial available as a handy printable.

Step 1

Now, draw four wings, starting with the bigger upper ones, followed by the smaller lower wings.

Step 2

Add a few decorative circles inside the wings to make them extra fun and unique.

Step 3

Give your butterfly some personality! Draw two round eyes and a big, happy smile.

Step 4

Color the inside of the mouth and add two curly antennae on top of the head.

Step 5

To make the butterfly’s body more detailed, draw a few horizontal lines across it.

Step 6

Time to add some color! Color in the body and head (we used yellow and orange for a warm, sunny look).

Step 7

Color the upper wings. We went with pink, but kids can choose any shade they like!

Step 8

Add color to the circles inside the upper wings for contrast. We thought dark pink and green would look nice.

Step 9

Now, move on to the bottom wings. We colored them blue and added yellow to the circles for a bright and cheerful effect.

Step 10

Once the butterfly is fully colored, carefully cut it out along the outline.

Step 11

Take a sheet of blue paper and have kids apply glue all over.

Step 12

Grab two or three shades of green paper and cut out spiky strips to resemble grass.

Glue them onto the bottom of the blue background.

Step 13

Finally, glue the butterfly on top to look like it’s fluttering above the grass.

Step 14

And there you have it, your beautiful paper butterfly spring craft is complete!
