Drip Painting Flowers – Spring Art Idea for Kindergarten

This is an easy art project for even the youngest kids. Drip painting flowers can be done by preschoolers, kids in kindergarten and, as the end result can be really pretty, older kids too!

If you are making this art idea with preschoolers, we recommend using cupcake liners for flowers as we did, while older kids can create their own flowers out of various materials.

We share a lot of crafts ideas for kids, but think art is even more important! This art project is all about the process as it’s main focus is on fine motor skills.

As pipettes are used to drip paint over the canvas, this requires a bit of skill and patience and eye.

As different tones of green are used, it can also be a good starting talking point to discuss different tones of colors and how mixing two different tones of green in different ratios can bring about a whole selection of new color tones.

How to Make the Drip Painting Flowers Art Project

What you need:

  • canvas
  • pipettes (big ones for younger kids)
  • easel
  • green paints (tempera or other washable paints, acrylic paints for older kids are good too)
  • water
  • cupcake liners in different colors
  • glue
  • scissors

Older kids can also make their flowers out of newspaper, fabric or draw them directly on the canvas (amongst other options).

Step by Step Instructions

Prepare the colors. For preschoolers you will have to mix the colors for them, older kids can be tasked to mix the colors on their own. Add enough water to make the paint super runny (water it down quite a bit).

Fill the pipette with color an start dripping the color on the canvas (tilt the canvas at an angle so the paint will drip).

The top can be the “bottom” of your canvas…. Or you can start dripping the color from different heights and let it dip towards the bottom of the canvas (then this will be the bottom of your painting). You can also mix it up.

Continue dripping paint and mixing the colors until you are happy with how your painting looks like.

Take a cupcake liner (or two or three). Push the bottom of the cupcake in, so you invert the colors (white on the outside and colored part of the cupcake liner on the inside).

If you are making multi colored flowers, trim the cupcake liners that will be on the inside.

Add glue to the largest cupcake liner, and stick on a smaller, trimmed one.

Repeat for a tri color version.

Now you have a nice colorful cupcake liner flower.

We made three different ones for our drip painting flower art .

Apply glue on the canvas and stick the cupcake liner flowers on.

All done! You’ve just made a wonderful canvas with drip painting flowers.
