How to Make the Dragonfly Tin Foil Transfer Art

What you need:

  • white cardstock
  • black marker
  • washable color markers (pink, yellow, green, blue, orange, or any colors your kids like)
  • aluminum (tin) foil
  • spray bottle with water

Step by Step Tutorial

Start with a piece of cardstock or art paper.

Step 1

Draw the dragonfly’s body and head in the center with a black marker – you can follow our how to draw a dragonfly tutorial.

Step 2

Add eyes to the head.

Step 3

Draw two wings on each side of the body.

Step 4

Add details inside each wing.

Step 5

Add a few extra patterns if you like.

Step 6

Finish your dragonfly by adding six legs.

Step 7

Unroll a sheet of aluminum foil and smooth it out until it’s nice and flat, making sure it’s slightly larger than your dragonfly cardstock so there’s plenty of space for the color transfer magic.

Step 8

Use washable markers to add bright, colorful patches to the foil.

Step 9

Pink, yellow, green, blue, and orange work beautifully together.

Step 10

Fill a spray bottle with water.

Step 11

Lightly mist the foil until it’s damp but not dripping.

Step 12

Carefully place your dragonfly drawing face down on the wet foil.

Step 13

Press it firmly with your hands and gently rub to help the colors transfer.

Step 14

Slowly lift the paper away from the foil to reveal the colorful transfer.

Step 15

Set your artwork aside to dry.

Step 16

All done!
