What we love most about this craft idea is that it can be made almost entirely out of recycled materials. And even if you are not using recycled materials, especially if this is a Halloween craft you will do in the classroom, it’s still an inexpensive one. And your little ones will love their mummies.
How to Make Craft Stick Mummy
What you need:
- craft stick (store bought jumbo craft sticks or popsicle sticks left over from all those delicious summer treats)
- black paint
- paintbrush
- googly eyes or googly eye stickers
- old bandages (you can use white fabric from old shirts or just use paper instead)
Step by Step Tutorial
Start by painting the craft stick black.
Paint it black all the way and wait for the paint to dry. While you wait you can skip a step and move to cutting the bandages.
Once the paint is dry, add a pair of eyes on the top part of the craft stick. We love using googly eye stickers, and kids love them too; they are after all stickers! These are a better alternative to googly eyes.
Cut a strip of the bandage. Most households will have at least one pack of bandages that were previously opened, are way (way) past their expiry date or have been used but are still clean enough to be used in crafts. If you don’t have a bandage, you can use old T-shirts and cut them, use yarn or just use strips of paper.
Cut the bandage in half to make it thinner.
Tie the ends together if necessary to make it longer (you can always shorten it later).
Older kids can tie the bandage around the painted craft stick, without the use of glue. If you are working with younger kids, have them glue the bandage on the craft stick.
Now start wrapping the bandage around the craft stick. It doesn’t matter how the kids go about it, the only thing to keep in mind is to avoid wrapping the eyes.
Wrap, wrap, wrap.
Once happy with how the craft stick mummy is looking, tie a knot or glue the bandage to keep it all in place.
All done! The popsicle mummy craft is complete.
