How to Make Colorful Fish Art

What you need:

  • printable template (optional)
  • black cardstock (other colors are great as well)
  • tempera or craft paints (colors of your choice)
  • paintbrush
  • black marker
  • scissors
  • glue stick

Step by Step Tutorial

We’ll be making ours on black cardstock as this one gives a nice contrast to the craft paints we are using.

You can use any other color, adjusting it accordingly to the art supplies your kids are using (if you are using watercolors, a brighter choice of paper is needed).

Step 1

Let’s make the water scene. We’re using different shades of blue to make the waves. Start by painting lines from top to bottom, leaving enough space in between them to fill them with other colors.

Step 2

We recommend starting with a fewer number and larger gaps. You can always return to the same color later.

Step 3

Use a different shade of blue and draw lines, between the lines you painted previously.

Step 4

Again, go from top to bottom.

Step 5

You don’t have to stick with one color only – to make things brighter, the next color we used is white.

Step 6

Let the kids continue painting the lines, adding more in between where needed to fill up the whole scene.

Allow the paint to dry.

Step 7

In the meantime, print out the fish template (or have kids draw their own).

Step 8

It’s time to paint the fish. Draw the eyes (or use googly eyes).

Step 9

Have the kids paint the fish with any art supply they want.

For example, paint the fish’s body with watercolors.

Step 10

You can make the fish one colored or multicolored.

Step 11

Add scales or skip them.

Step 12

Let them get creative with decorating their fish.

Step 13

Cut out all the fish shapes from the template and glue them to the painted cardstock.

Step 14

Aren’t they pretty?
