How to Make the Butterfly Sponge Printing Art
What you need:
- white cardstock
- clean sponge
- elastic band (or thread)
- craft paint (or any color of choice – we used yellow, pink, and orange)
- black marker
Step by Step Tutorial
Start with a piece of white cardstock. You can use plain print paper, but cardstock is preferred.
Grab a clean sponge.
Prepare an elastic band, or use a piece of thread, which will work just as well.
Wrap it tightly around the center of the sponge to create a bow shape. You’ve just made the butterfly stamp!
Time to add some color!
Use any color you like to paint the center bow-shaped part of the sponge.
Choose a different paint color to add a second strip on each side of the butterfly’s wings. We painted it pink.
Paint the very edges of the sponge with another color to create beautiful multicolored wings. We used orange.
Now for the fun part! Have kids flip the sponge over and press it firmly onto the cardstock.
If the prints don’t work out, add more paint as well as some water to prevent the paint from drying.
Gently lift the sponge to reveal the butterfly shape!
Add more paint if needed and stamp again to make the colors pop.
Let the butterfly print dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Once dry, draw the butterfly’s body with a black marker and add two curly antennae.
That’s it!
Your beautiful butterflies are ready to take flight!
