How to Make Sea Sunset Art With Warm and Cool Colors

What you need:

  • printable template (optional)
  • white cardstock or art paper
  • tempera or other paints or markers
  • paintbrush
  • pencil
  • black marker

Step by Step Tutorial

You can use our printable sunset template with the black lines already drawn so all that’s needed is to paint the image or you can have the kids draw their own scene from scratch.

Step 1

Start by drawing wavy lines on the bottom side of the sheet.

Step 2

Next, draw a round shape above the waves, creating the sun.

Draw straight lines to make the rays.

Step 3

Then, trace the pencil lines with a thick black marker to define the shapes and create a bold outline.

Step 4

Color the waves with cool colors (various shades of blue; you can also use greens)

Step 5

This is a great opportunity to talk about cool and warm colors with your kids.

Step 6

You can have them play with different shades of blue or pick other cool colors to make the waves.

Step 7

Next is painting the sun with bright yellow paint, making it the focal point of the sunset scene.

Step 8

Color the rays with yellow and other warm colors.

Step 9

Orange and bright red work great for this project.

Step 10

Paint in all the rays.

Step 11

Allow the paint to dry, and use the black marker again to trace along the lines.

Step 12

All done!

Step 13

The interplay of cool blues and warm yellows and oranges creates a wonderful summer scene.

All that’s left to do is to proudly display your kid’s artwork.

Happy painting!
