Picnics and ants go hand in hand! This picnic ants art project is a fun way to celebrate outdoor eating season with a little humor.
This guided drawing activity comes with a helpful template that shows kids exactly how to create those classic picnic crashers – ants! The template includes step-by-step visuals and a checkered picnic blanket background that kids can color in any pattern they like.

Picnic Ants Art Project
What you need:
- our printable picnic ants template
- highlight markers or wide tip markers
- black marker – permanent marker is best (for the ants)
- pencil, gray coloring pencil or ligh gray marker for shading (optional)
- scissors
Step by Step Instructions
Print the template. Print out the picnic ants art template. Each sheet includes a large square for the picnic blanket, ant drawing guides, and smaller example patterns to reference with written instructions. Perfect for larger groups.
Color the picnic blanket pattern. Start by coloring in a pattern on the large square. The template shows how kids can make a classic picnic blanket pattern.
Add the crossing lines. Once the first set of lines is colored, add lines going the other direction to complete the checkered pattern.
Draw the ants. Time to add the uninvited guests! Use the ant tutorial on the side of the template as a guide. Ants are made from simple circles and ovals. Two circles for the body, a smaller circle for the head, then add six legs and two antennae.
Add details. Older kids can also add shading to give their drawing some depth. Gently color under the ants with a pencil or light gray markers.
Cut out. Cut out along the border lines to create a finished square that’s perfect for displaying on a bulletin board or framing.
The finished picnic blankets look great displayed together as a group! Each one will have different colors and ant arrangements.
