Supplies You’ll Need
To get those crisp, clear prints we talked about in my guide to the Best Paints for Handprints, make sure you have:
- Cardstock: Do not use regular printer paper! The paint will cause it to wrinkle. 65lb or 110lb cardstock is best.
- Washable Tempera or Child-Safe Ink: (See my safety tips above).
- Sponge Brush: To apply an even layer of paint.

What is the best paper for handprint art?
Always use cardstock. Regular office paper is too thin and will “buckle” or tear when wet paint is applied.
How do I make the handprint not smudge on the poem?
The “Press and Roll” method is key. Place the palm down first, then gently press each finger into the paper. Lift the hand straight up to avoid sliding and blurring the text.
