How to Make the Easy Rainbow Sponge Painting Art
What you need:
- white cardstock
- sponge
- paintbrush
- craft paint (red, orange, yellow, green, and blue)
- a large scrap paper or a table covering
Step by Step Tutorial
This project works best on a white cardstock.
Grab a sponge. This will be your secret tool for creating a perfect rainbow.
Using a paintbrush, add a generous amount of red paint to the edge of the sponge. You can add a drop or two of water to ensure the paint doesn’t dry while you add other paints.
Only paint a small portion of the sponge, leaving plenty of room for other paints.
Right below the red, add a strip of orange paint.
Keep going! Add yellow underneath the orange.
Next, apply green paint under the yellow.
Finish off your rainbow by adding blue at the bottom edge of the sponge.
We’ve only used five colors, as seven wouldn’t fit nicely on our sponge, but if you want to teach kids about the order of the colors in the rainbow, this is a great little art project to do just that.
Place a larger scrap paper under the cardstock to keep your workspace clean.
Have kids hold the sponge with the painted edge at the top right corner of the cardstock.
Carefully start scraping the sponge in a curved motion toward the lower left side of the cardstock.
Tip: if the paints have dried up too much, add a bit of water to the sponge.
Move slowly and steadily to create a smooth and vibrant rainbow arc.
