Curly Turkey Craft (Thanksgiving Activity)

We have a wonderful turkey craft idea to share with you, and it comes with a free printable template.

This Thanksgiving craft is great for using up smaller strips of paper. You can also turn it into a recycling project by swapping the construction paper with magazines or painted newspaper.

November is the best month for making all kinds of turkey crafts with kids, this one, in particular, is great for kids in kindergarten or older as it does require some fine motor skills. If you are making this with younger kids, you can adjust it and have the kids just glue on the paper strips without curling them.

These look amazing displayed on a bulletin board (as does our fun printable disguise a turkey craft).

How to Make the Curly Turkey Craft

What you need:

  • our printable template (you can find it close to the end of this tutorial)
  • construction paper for the background (green works well; any color can be used
  • regular colored paper in fall colors
  • glue, scissors

Step by Step Tutorial

Cut out plenty of paper strips. Ours were cut across the length of a letter-sized paper, and they are about a “finger” wide. You can make them shorter, longer, wider, or thinner.

If you are making this turkey craft in the classroom, it’s best to prepare at least some of the strips beforehand.

Color in the template and cut it out.

To make things easier, place the template in the middle of the construction paper and make a partial outline. This will make sticking the paper strips easier.

Apply glue, either on the construction paper or on one end of the paper strip.

Stick the first paper strip on the construction paper.

Continue with other paper strips, being mindful of the location of the turkey outline.

It’s best to wait just a little for the glue to dry before moving forward. Once the glue is dry, take the first paper strip and swirl it around once or twice…

…and apply glue on the end of the paper strip and stick the end on the construction paper.

Depending on the glue you use, you might need to press the strip down for a little while for the glue to set before moving on to the next paper strip.

Continue with all of the other paper strips.

Take the turkey body, apply glue.

Stick the turkey on top of the curled papers.

Add turkey feet. We hope you also appreciate our little helper.

Stick both feet on the turkey and you are done.

We just love how colorful this curly turkey craft turns out.
