Bird Handprint Art

Close the gap between making handprint keepsakes with dipping hands in paints and drawing. Why only do one when you can combine the best of two worlds and make a bird handprint art with markers.

A simple outline of the hand opens up a world of creativity, still capturing what makes the handprint art so special, capturing memories and the size of the little hands.

How to Make the Bird Handprint Art

What you need:

  • white square paper or cardstock
  • pencil
  • black marker
  • markers or crayons

Step by Step Tutorial

For this you will need a sheet of white paper or cardstock, or any other color, as long as it’s bright enough for your kids to be able to color it with markers or crayons.

Step 1

Have kids place their hand on the paper, fingers relaxed and just apart enough so they don’t touch.

You can have them trace around the fingers with a maker, but we recommend going in with a pencil first.

Step 2

Trace around the fingers and the palm. Remove the hand and draw a curved line connecting the ends at the bottom of the palm to make your handprint outline.

Step 3

Now have the kids trace the pencil line with a thick black marker (if working with younger kids, you can do this step).

Step 5

It’s time to start the transformation, from handprint to bird.

Start by drawing two triangles to make the beak. It’s already starting to look a little like a birdie isn’t it?

Step 6

Add a round eye near the beak.

Step 7

A simple halfcircle makes a good wing. Also, have the kids draw to lines from the bottom to make the legs, completing them with three little lines for the feet. All done.

Step 8

The only thing left to do is to color the bird. It can be a single color or you can have the kids use more. Adding in more details like feather details can make this project even more fun.

Step 9

Color the beak yellow.

Step 10

Ours is a little blue bird with a green wing, to make it stand out.

Step 11

And that’s all there is to it – your handprint art is complete!

Step 12

Perfect spring craft for kids!

Now why settle for one, if you can make a whole flock in many colors.
