Fall is the best time for making all kinds of forest animal crafts, and today, we will be showing you how to make a super cute swirly squirrel craft for kids. This is a fun activity with a focus on fine motor skills, as kids will need to carefully twist and turn the paper strips to make the squirrel’s tail pop!
What we love the most about this project is that you can customize it to fit any age, make it simple for preschool and kindergarten, or add a challenge by increasing the number of paper strips for older kids. Either way, the end result will be great.

How to Make the Swirly Squirrel Craft for Kids
What you need:
- our printable template (optional) or a hand-drawn squirrel
- white print paper
- cardstock in any color of your choosing
- scissors
- glue
Download the template – let kids add colors or use the pre-colored version for instant crafting fun.
Gather colorful strips (we picked orange, cut 4 wide ones) and choose cardboard (we recommend green for the background).
Have kids cut out the squirrel shape.
Use a pencil to outline the squirrel’s back, where the tail will be placed.
Have the kids apply glue to the left side of the pencil’s curve.
It’s time to glue all the color strips for the tail!
Have kids make swirl the first paper strip.
Then, add glue to the end of the strip.
Press it down on the background and hold in place for a little bit for the glue to set.
Repeat the steps with all paper strips to create a bushy tail.
It’s time to glue on the squirrel!
All done!
