This art project offers great scissor skill practice.

We just love how the colors make it pop. Your kids can use construction paper or recycled paper (magazines, commercials…)

How to Make the Paper Strip Pumpkin Art Idea

What you need:

  • printable template (optional)
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • glue
  • construction paper in various colors or old newspaper and other recycled papers

Step by Step Tutorial

Cut out paper strips in various colors. If you are preparing this for larger groups, using a paper cutter saves a lot of time.

Prepare a sheet of paper. The paper doesn’t have to be white, it will be covered with paper strips. We do recommend using construction paper though for the craft to be a bit firmer (regular paper works out OK, but construction paper is better).

Step 1

Apply glue on the paper, starting at one side. Stick the first paper strip on the paper.

Step 2

Continue by gluing another paper strip next to it (you will get the best results if the paper is in different color).

Step 3

Continue adding more and apply more glue as you go.

Step 4

Continue adding paper strips until the whole cardstock is covered.

Print out a desired pumpkin outline template (or draw your own), have the kids cut it out, and trace it with a pencil on the color strips.

Step 5

Cut out the pumpkin shape.

Step 6

Prepare a light green rectangle for the stem.

Step 7

Glue a dark green strip on one side.

Step 8

Repeat on the other side for the pumpkin’s stem.

Step 9

Round the corners of the stem.

Step 10

And glue it to the back of your pumpkin.

Step 11

Cut out two black triangles for the eyes and glue the first one on.

Spooky!

Step 12

Add another triangle for a completed Jack-o’-lantern face.

Step 13

Cut a semicircle from black paper, then create teeth shapes for the pumpkin’s mouth.

Step 14

Almost done.

Step 15

Glue it on!

Step 16

All done!

Step 17

Your vibrant paper strips pumpkin craft is ready to show off.
