Egg Carton Turtle Craft for Kids

Don’t throw away your egg cartons, you and your kids can make this adorable egg carton turtle craft instead. This is an easy and fun way to recycle old egg cartons and give them a new life. It’s a perfect little summer craft for kids to make at home or at a summer camp, but as turtles and tortoises are always popular this one is fun to make all year round.

What’s also great about this one is that although we will be showing you how to make a green one, this turtle craft looks great in any color. Your kids can make a rainbow of turtles.

Warm summer days just call for making all kinds of summer crafts, especially ones that are ocean animal-themed like turtles.

This particular egg carton craft for kids is great for all ages (and yay for recycling!), you just need to prepare the egg cartons (cut them out beforehand) if you are making this project in preschool or kindergarten as some egg cartons can be tricky to cut.

How to Make the Egg Carton Turtle Craft

What you need:

  • pencil
  • scissors
  • glue
  • egg carton
  • paint (we used light and dark green)
  • black marker
  • white paper (or use googly eyes)
  • green paper

Step by Step Tutorial

The Body

Have kids use egg cartons and draw a line around two embossed parts.

As previously mentioned, if you are working with preschoolers or kids in kindergarten this part is best done by you before hand (even more so if this is a classroom craft or a summer camp one).

Step 1

Cut out the piece (it should be shaped like a number eight).

Step 2

We used acrylic paints, but you can use tempera or even liquid watercolors to paint the egg carton.

Tip: if you are working with younger kids, use washable paints.

Step 3

You will need two colors to paint the turtle. No matter which colors your kids choose, this craft turns out the cutest if a lighter color is used for the head and a darker one for the shell.

Step 4

To make the turtle shell more realistic, have kids use a black marker and draw the lines on it.

Step 5

The Legs

Cut out four leg shapes out of green (or other) colored paper.

Step 6

Your kids can cut out each one individually, or if they are more skilled, place the papers on top of the other and cut out all four simultaneously.

Step 7

Have kids use glue to attach the turtle’s legs.

Step 8

The Eyes

Have them cut out two circles from white paper, then use a black marker to draw the eyes and glue them to the turtle’s head.

They can also use googly eyes or googly eye stickers.

Step 9

The Mouth

All this turtle needs is a pretty smile. Have children use the black marker again to draw it.

Step 10

The egg carton turtle craft is completed!

If your kids want, they can also add a small tail on the back but this does require a bit more fine motor skills.
