Printable Chinese Dragon Puppet

If your celebration of Chinese new year needs a fun craft project this printable Chinese Dragon puppet is perfect.

Dragons have always fascinated us, no matter which part of the world they come from. Such magnificent fire breathing creatures that easily fascinate children and make them wish real dragons existed.

Chinese dragons are wonderful both in their might and in their colors, certainly one of the most colorful legendary beasts that ever existed. I hope I managed to capture some of that magic in this printable Chinese dragon puppet design.

Whether it be a celebration at your home, a foreign culture learning lesson in the classroom, or just having fun with this mythical creature, this craft project is great both for small and big settings. It’s a wonderful and easy to follow craft project for the classroom or it can be a quick boredom buster to make at home.

How to Make a Printable Chinese Dragon Puppet

What you need:

• you will need our Printable Chinese Dragon Puppet Template (also available in this Printable Character Puppets Bundle)
• printer
• paper (heavier print paper is recommended for durability, regular print paper is OK too)
• coloring supplies (markers, crayons…)
• scissors
• glue

Print out the puppet, preferably on heavier print paper (especially if you will be coloring the dragon puppet with markers), or use regular print paper.

Time to color! On the sheet with the puppet, color in the middle third of the design. Left and right third do not need coloring as they won’t be seen.

Also color the “accessories” on the other sheet.

Fold along all the dashed lines on the design.

Make sure the folds are crisp. We run a craft stick over the folds to make them crisp in no time.

Fold both horizontal and vertical dashed lines.

When all lines are folded, unfold.

Turn the paper over, the design facing the table. Fold over the side “third” with the word glue on it. Apply glue.

Fold over the other side, covering the “glue” one, and press together for the glue to set.

Now fold this into a M shape, as your folds are already nice and crisp this will be really easy to do.

It’s best to give the glue some more time to set, so we do recommend you use a clothespin (instead of holding down with your hands and waiting) to keep the puppet together.

Cut out all the accessories. The fiery ears, the moustaches and fierce teeth. Fold along the dashed line separating the design and teeth and ears.

Glue the accessories to your printable chinese dragon puppet (don’t worry, the design allows for teeth to be placed inside the mouth, and mouth opening and closing nicely).

All done!
