Why Optical Illusion Art?

Optical illusions (or “Op Art”) are a fantastic way to combine math, science, and art. By using specific line patterns and shading, we can trick our eyes into seeing depth on a flat piece of paper. It’s a great STEM (or STEAM) activity for the classroom or a rainy afternoon at home!

How to Color the Optical Illusion Ester Egg

What you need:

Step by Step Coloring Tutorial

Print the template. You can use the one with the lines pre-made or use the blank one and draw your own lines.

To make your Easter eggs look like they are 3D and “bulging” forward, follow these simple tips:

1. The Power of Curved Lines

Instead of drawing straight stripes across your egg, use curved lines. The more you curve the line toward the edges of the egg, the rounder it will look. Think of it like drawing lines on a basketball!

2. Contrast is Key

To get that “dizzy” optical effect, use high-contrast colors. Complementary colors (like purple and yellow or blue and orange) make the patterns pop and vibrate against each other.

3. Add Some Shading

Want to make it look truly 3D? Use a slightly darker shade of your color (or a gray pencil) near the very edges of the egg. This creates a “shadow” that makes the center of the egg look like it’s closer to you.

Step 1

Color the Easter egg sections.

Step 2

Choosing two colors here gives your egg that proper Easter feel.

Step 3

Add depth with shading.

Step 4

The shading should be under the egg as well as on the sides to really make it pop off the page.

Step 5

Continue adding more shades. You can also lighten up some areas with white colored pencils or crayons.

Step 6

Want your eggs to be even bolder? Use markers!
