What you need:

  • our printable drawing guide (optional)
  • pencil or black marker (I recommend a marker or crayons for this)
  • paper
  • optional: coloring supplies

Step by Step House Drawing Instructions

Step 1

To start, have the kids draw a straight line at the bottom of their sheet to make the foundation for their house drawing.

Tip: They can also draw a curved line if they want to draw their house on the top of a hill.

Single line

Step 2

It’s time to raise the walls!

Start by placing the tip of the marker above the line (middle of the sheet) and slowly glide it downward until the line meets the foundation.

Repeat the process to make another line, parallel to the first one you drew. The outer walls of your house are now done.

Step 3

We’re drawing the roof next!

Place your marker at the center between the walls, but closer to the top of your drawing area. Now draw a line from this mark to the top of one of the walls.

Place the marker back to the center point and draw a line from it to the top of the other wall. A triangle roof base is done!

Step 3

Step 4

Starting from the left corner where the roof and the wall meet (or right, depending on your dominant hand), draw a U curve and then follow the shape of your roof to complete it.

Step 4

Step 5

Draw doors in the center of the house.

They can be rounded or rectangle-shaped, whichever you prefer.

Step 5

Step 6

Next, draw windows.

Depending on how much room you have left in your drawing, you can either draw one, two, three, or even more windows.

Step 6

Step 7

Add details in the windows and a knob on the door.

The simplest way to draw these is to just draw a cross across the windows. But you can go beyond that and add curtains as well.

A simple oval for the doorknob completes the doors and windows on your house drawing.

Step 7

Step 8

The base of the hosue is done, but we have a bit more details to add!

Draw a pair of bushes, one on each side of the house. It’s such a small detail but it makes all the difference.

Our house also needs a chimney. Starting just above the house, draw two vertical lines that touch the roof.

Step 8

Step 9

Finish up the chimney by drawing a rectangle (with rounded or sharp corners) above the chimney lines from the previous step.

Step 9

Step 10

All done!

You have learned how to draw a house. The only thing that is left to do is to color in the house you just drew.
