Lunar New Year approaches and we have the most wonderful craft tutorial ready for you and your kids to make the celebrations even more special. This fire breathing Chinese Dragon craft is great to make in the classroom or at home as it looks great displayed on the wall (or fridge).
Just imagine a classroom filled with these fun-looking Lunar dragon crafts! We have a handy template that will make this craft even easier; however, you can also have kids draw their own to make this an art project.

This is such a great Chinese New Year craft idea as it’s so colorful, and because Lunar dragons are so cool looking.
How to Make the Fire Breathing Chinese Dragon Craft
What you need:
- our printable template (optional) or a hand-drawn dragon head
- white print paper
- cardstock in any color of your choosing (we love how black paper looks with this craft)
- scissors
- glue
Step by Step Tutorial
Are you ready for some Lunar New Year fun? Grab a sheet of cardstock, print out our template, and let the kids add their own splash of color to the Chinese dragon if you’ve picked the black-and-white version.
If your kids are using the black and white printout, have them color it in first.
Cut out the Chinese dragon’s head.
Then, mark the dragon’s mouth opening with a pencil. This will make the next steps easier.
Have kids apply glue to the marked spot.
Glue the color strips to the cardstock.
Glue on all of them. We used 6 in orange and two in yellow colors. If you are working with older kids, you can have them use even more paper strips.
Take one paper strip (on the outer edge) and make a couple of loops.
Add glue at the end of the curled paper strip.
Glue the paper strip to the background, hold it in place for a little while for the glue to set.
Repeat with other paper strips to make the flames.
It’s time to add the Chinese dragon’s head! Have kids apply glue to the back of it.
And glue it over the flames.
The Chinese New Year dragon craft is complete!
