This simple cut and paste activity is perfect for the classroom or at home. Print the templates, color the shamrocks in different shades of green and gold (or just print them on green paper), cut them out, and stick them on the portrait to create wild and wonderful clover hairstyles! The templates include many different portrait options – a few with a cute face already drawn, blank ones where kids can draw their own expressions. A fun punny one with Sham-rocking your hair is also included. Plus, there’s a whole sheet of shamrocks in different styles: simple shamrocks, ones with smiley faces, ones with patterns, and even some with hearts inside!
This craft works great as a St. Patrick’s Day bulletin board display or as individual cards kids can give to family and friends. It’s sham-rocking good fun!

Clover Hair Portraits Craft
What you need:
- our printable clover hair portrait templates
- coloring supplies (paint sticks, markers, crayons, or colored pencils)
- scissors
- glue stick
Step by Step Instructions
Print the templates. Print out the portrait template and the shamrock sheet. You can choose between the portrait with a face already drawn or the blank one, where kids can create their own expression.
Color the shamrocks. Start coloring in all those shamrocks! We used markers for patterned ones and paint sticks for blank shamrocks. Crayons, or colored pencils work great too. Try using different shades of green light green, dark green, lime, mint – to make the hairstyle more interesting!
Keep coloring. Color as many shamrocks as you want for your hairstyle. One sheet is enough to make one hairstyle, but you can have the kids use more.
Cut out the shamrocks. Once your shamrocks are colored and dry, carefully cut them all out. You’ll have a nice collection of different shamrock styles to choose from.
Time to start making the hair. Prepare the portrait template. If you chose the blank one, have the kids draw in a face first before adding the shamrock hair!
Start gluing the shamrocks. Use the glue stick to attach shamrocks around the head area. Start with a few along the top and sides to create the basic hairstyle shape.
Fill in the hairstyle. Keep adding more shamrocks to fill in the hair. Mix and match the different shamrock styles. Combine the smiley ones with the patterned ones and the simple ones for variety!
Finish up. Add any final touches – maybe color in the lips with a pink or red marker to complete the look!
Your clover hair portrait is done! These make fantastic St. Patrick’s Day decorations and kids love seeing their creative shamrock hairstyles come to life.
