If you’ve ever walked into a bookstore or searched Amazon looking for the perfect kids art and craft book, you already know the struggle.
You find a cover with a gorgeous, picture-perfect project, flip it open, and immediately realize you need a specialty craft store run, three hours of prep time, and a prayer that your living room won’t end up covered in permanent dye. Or even worse in this day and age… You realize the inside is low quality AI.

As a creator who has spent years designing activities for kids, I’ll let you in on a secret: the best craft books for kids shouldn’t make more work for the parents. Whether you are looking for a foolproof craft book for 4 or 5 year olds who are just mastering their scissors skills, or need a low-prep rainy day savior for independent 7 year olds, having a few vetted, high-quality books on your shelf is a total game-changer. It means less screen time, less mess-dread, and more genuine, creative fun.
To save you the guesswork, I’ve rounded up the absolute best art craft books on the market right now, and I can say that with confidence because I own every single one. These are written by fellow creators I know, trust, and love, people who know exactly how to keep kids engaged using simple, everyday materials.
Let’s dive into the ultimate additions to your family library!
1. Easy Peasy Paper Projects by Andreja Vučajnk (aka me)
Naturally, I have to start with a project that is incredibly close to my heart! Technically, I don’t own this book yet, as I am still waiting for my copy to arrive, but needless to say, I know each and every project inside the book. I wrote this book because I wanted to create the ultimate antidote to complicated, high-mess crafting.

Why it’s a must-have: If you are hunting for a foolproof craft book for 5 year olds or independent 7 year olds, this is your new best friend. Every single one of the 50 projects is made using low-cost, everyday materials you already have at home, mostly paper, scissors, and glue. I also made sure that the majority of the projects inside the book encourage kids to go beyond the finished project, to really make it their own. These aren’t just crafts that sit on a shelf gathering dust. The book is full of ideas on making paper toys, projects you can gift to others, special holiday makes…
My favorite projects?: Now this is a pickle :). All of them. But if I had to choose a few, then the little paper house village would be one of them, then the chomping dions and the sleepy mouse.
2. The Big Book of Fantasy Kid Crafts by Jennifer Buchheit
If you have a child whose imagination is firmly rooted in magical realms, Jennifer (the creative force behind Studio Rosie) has written the absolute blueprint for their dream afternoon. I myself am a huge fan of all things magical, so flipping through the pages of this book has me mesmerized each and every time.

Why it’s a must-have: This is a massive, 240-page treasure trove of 60 eco-friendly, low-cost projects. It fits beautifully into the best craft books for kids category because it turns everyday recycling like cardboard boxes, corks, and tissue paper into purely magical creations. And the thing I love the most, is that it has a “mix and match” value to it. While every project in the book is fun on it’s own, you can pair many of them to create magical worlds, either small worlds for play, or huge projects that turn your room into an enchanted land.
My favorite projects?: It’s really hard to choose as each and every one is absolutely magical. But if I had to choose a few; fairy doors are absolute magic! I’m obsessed with the dragon eggs and when you pair them with the giant paper dragon that spans across the whole room? Magnificent!
3. Fun and Easy Crafting with Recycled Materials by Kimberly McLeod

If you follow The Best Ideas for Kids, you already know that Kimberly is an absolute genius at finding creative potential in things most people throw in the recycling bin.
